4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Hilton Hawaiian Village: Coral II (Mid-Pacific Conference Center)
Ensuring safe medication practices to prevent errors and protect patients from harm is an ongoing endeavor. For nearly three decades, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) has been drawing attention to errors and adverse events associated with parenteral nutrition (PN). Persistent shortages of PN products have exacerbated the risk of errors in the prescribing, preparing, and administering of these sterile compounds.
Lipid injectable emulsions (ILEs) are complex pharmaceutical formulations used as a source of energy and essential fatty acids in parenteral nutrition therapy. The use of alternative ILEs in neonatal and pediatric patients can provide clinical benefits by delivering necessary calories and nutrients.
Please join our panel of speakers as they review the risks and error prevention strategies associated with the prescribing, preparation, and administration of parenteral nutrition as well as describe prescribing considerations and recommendations for use of alternative ILEs in neonatal and pediatric patients.
Intended Audience
- Neonatologists
- Pediatric specialists
- Pediatric generalists
- Pediatric educators
- Pediatric academic researchers
Learning Objectives
- Describe three strategies to minimize errors with use of parenteral nutrition in neonates.
