Webinar | UV Disinfection vs. Hydrogen Peroxide in the COVID-19 Era
Overview
Since the onset of the global SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, reducing the transmission of healthcare-associated infections has become even more important. Cleaning and disinfecting are critical to reducing the risk of transmission, but is there another step that hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and skilled nursing facilities can take?
In this recording, ECRI’s infection prevention and health device experts compare how ultraviolet (UV) and hydrogen peroxide vapor (HPV) eliminate SARS-CoV-2, norovirus, multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs), and other pathogens. This webinar focuses different technologies, implementation and operational considerations, and strategies for safe and effective use of each technology.
Focus areas include:
- Ultraviolet (UV) and hydrogen peroxide vapor (HPV) technologies for supplemental environmental surface disinfection
- Relative advantages and disadvantages of UV and HPV disinfection
- Considerations for safe and effective use in hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and skilled nursing facilities
This presentation concludes with an information Q&A session.

Agenda & Speakers
Jim Davis, MSN, RN, CCRN-K, HEM, CIC, FAPIC
Senior Infection Prevention & Patient Safety Analysts/Consultant, ECRI
Jim Davis has 25-plus years of nursing experience spanning long-term care, adult critical care, clinical decision support, education, nurse management, and infection prevention. He has designed version 2 of the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority’s long-term care healthcare acquired infection reporting system and analytics programs and has provided educational programs about infection control topics for risk management groups and patient safety organizations.
Hillary Hei, MPH, CIC, LSSGB
Infection Preventionist, ECRI
Prior to joining ECRI in 2020, Hillary honed her infection control career in the pediatric world for 5 years. She became certified in Infection Control in 2017 and also became a certified Lean/Six Sigma Green Belt in 2019. She is a member of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Prevention (APIC) and serves on the national Research Committee as the liaison for the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC).
Margaret M. Miller, MT (ASCP) M, CIC, FAPIC
Infection Preventionist, ECRI
Prior to joining ECRI in 2020, Margaret was the sepsis project manager at The Hospital and Health System Association of Pennsylvania and a subject matter expert for HAPevolve for infection prevention, COVID-19 care in acute and post-acute facilities, sepsis, and highly infectious diseases. She is also a consultant for the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) and has worked to re-open international non-healthcare businesses during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
Amanda Sivek, PhD
Principal Project Engineer I, ECRI
Since joining ECRI in 2015, Amanda has worked mainly on topics relevant to the field of infection prevention and control, including the completion of laboratory evaluations of ultraviolet mobile device disinfection boxes. Her recent evaluations include point-of-care blood gas and pH analyzers and automatic scalp cooling systems that can reduce chemotherapy-induced hair loss for some cancer patients.
Mairead Smith
Senior Project Engineer, ECRI
Mairead has evaluated laparoscopic and flexible endoscopic video systems, cardiac devices, and ultraviolet disinfection devices since joining ECRI in 2013. She has also facilitated testing at local hospitals to assess the effectiveness of UV disinfection implementation in the real world and has worked closely with a microbiology lab and UV device manufacturers.
