Two ECRI Medical Device Experts Honored In TechNation’s 40 Under 40 List

ECRI has been evaluating the safety and effectiveness of medical devices and health technology longer than the FDA. The patient safety nonprofit operates the only independent medical device testing labs in the world.

Two members of ECRI’s device evaluation team recently received recognition from TechNation, the primary magazine and resource guide for medical equipment service professionals. TechNation’s 40 Under 40 List celebrates the achievements of young professionals in Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) and recognizes their hard work, creativity, and innovative contributions that are advancing the industry.

ECRI’s Julie Miller and Priyanka Shah were named on the TechNation 40 Under 40 List. Learn more about ECRI’s honorees:

Julie Miller has worked in ECRI’s device evaluation team since 2013. Her focus has been on surgical technologies including electrosurgical units and electrodes, sutures, staplers, surgical lights, laparoscopic insufflators, sponge counters, and smoke evacuation systems. She is a subject matter expert in surgical robotics, lasers, advanced energy and vessel sealing, and orthopedic implants. Julie earned her master’s degree in bioengineering.

I’m always impressed at the willingness of the industry to strive for better,” Julie shared. “Of course there’s room for improvement, but that’s what we’re here for and we’re all working together to make things safer and easier – not just for patients, but also for clinicians and caregivers.”

I’m particularly passionate about spreading the word on electrosurgical safety,” Julie explained. “This could involve evaluating devices that help facilitate safer use of the technology, collaborating with my fantastic colleagues on a series of informational posters on surgical fire prevention, breaking down more complex electrical concepts for general understanding, or maybe investigating the root cause of suspected injuries. I find it’s never an inopportune time to educate the industry on a widely-used, but perhaps less-well-understood technology.”

Priyanka Shah

Principal Project Officer I – Device Safety

Connect with Priyanka on LinkedIn

Priyanka Shah has worked in ECRI’s device evaluation team since 2015. She performs medical device evaluations, develops guidance for healthcare facilities, conducts accident investigations and consults healthcare facilities on the selection and appropriate use of healthcare technologies. Her focus is on physiologic patient monitoring, EHR documentation, alarm management, consumer devices, telehealth, usability and human factors. Priyanka earned her master’s degree in biomedical engineering from Purdue University.

“At ECRI, we evaluate medical technologies while integrating human factors engineering and safety science,” Priyanka explained. “Over the past few years, I have focused on evaluating technologies related to patient monitoring, EHR usability, and home health. These efforts have been incredibly rewarding as they help prevent avoidable harm. Hospitals and health systems rely on our insights for technology selection, implementation, and risk mitigation in this ever-evolving healthcare landscape.”

“I thoroughly enjoy and deeply value the opportunity to do impactful work that’s geared towards improving healthcare and patient safety, whilst collaborating with diverse industry stakeholders and colleagues,” added Priyanka. Read the full 40 Under 40 list from TechNation.
