World Patient Safety Day
It’s estimated that 10% to 15% of patients may experience a diagnostic error during their lifetimes, with women and minorities having been found to have a 20% to 30% increased risk of diagnostic error in studies which indicate an association with gender, race, or ethnicity. Missed diagnoses can result in delays in care and devastating consequences.
With this in mind, global leaders have dedicated 2024 World Patient Safety Day, September 17, to improving diagnosis for patient safety. ECRI and our affiliate, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), join them in working toward for safer more affordable, equitable, and accessible care for mothers and babies everywhere. Together, we’re advocating for:
- Increasing worldwide awareness of diagnostic errors that lead to patient harm and highlight the importance of accurate, timely, and safe diagnosis in enhancing patient safety
- Emphasizing the importance of diagnostic safety in patient safety policies and clinical practices across all levels of healthcare
- Promoting cooperation among policymakers, healthcare leaders, health workers, patient organizations, and other stakeholders to enhance accurate, timely, and safe diagnoses
- Encouraging patients and families to take an active role in collaborating with healthcare providers and leaders to enhance diagnostic procedures
Please join us in raising global awareness about diagnostic error, adopting effective and innovative strategies to improve diagnoses, and employing best practices at the point of care to prevent missed diagnoses and harm to patients.
