Dementia Care in Indiana Nursing Homes: Reducing Preventable Harm Associated with Elopement and Missing Residents

March 26, 2025 | 1:30 p.m. ET

Overview

ECRI is committed to providing and helping to implement actionable best-practices that improve care consistently across state-wide health systems. The aim of this project is to aid Indiana nursing home provider organizations in the care of people with dementia to keep residents safe and improve quality of life. ECRI’s hazardous wandering and elopement (HW&E) program will provide assistance to enhance participating nursing homes’ current programs to reduce the number of elopement incidents and preventable harm associated with missing resident events.  When successful, improvements and practices associated with hazardous wandering and elopement improve safety for all stakeholders including residents, staff, provider organizations, and other vested parties.

Learning Objectives

  • Provide a timeline and description of the HW&E program for participating Indiana nursing homes
  • Learn about the bundled approach ECRI will take to provide Indiana nursing home communities with resources and subject matter expert consultation
  • Discuss next steps needed from each participating nursing home community
