Developing Trustworthy Clinical Practice Guidelines Helps Clinicians Improve Safety and Effectiveness of Care

ECRI webinar demonstrates methods for effective guideline development

Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are statements that include recommendations intended to optimize patient care that are informed by a systematic review of evidence and an assessment of the benefits and harms of alternative care options, according to the National Academy of Medicine.  Rather than dictating a one-size-fits-all approach to patient care, CPGs are created to aid clinicians with decision making by clearly describing and appraising the evidence and reasoning regarding the likely benefits and harms related to specific clinical recommendations. Guideline developers, specialty societies, and healthcare practitioners may struggle to keep up with the consistently evolving evidence supporting clinical practice. To assist those tasked with developing trustworthy CPGs, ECRI’s Clinical Evidence team hosted a webinar to describe and discuss best practices related to guideline development.

For organizations looking to develop new clinical practice guidelines or update existing ones, ECRI can help. With more than 25 years of experience, ECRI provides expert guideline methodology support tailored to your organization’s needs, ensuring alignment with the National Academy of Medicine standards for trustworthy guidelines. ECRI has proudly assisted numerous medical specialty societies, healthcare associations, and government agencies, including the American College of Rheumatology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and Veterans Health Administration, in CPG development.

ECRI has a long history of curating and disseminating CPGs through freely accessible guideline repositories, including the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)’s now-retired National Guideline Clearinghouse and the current ECRI Guidelines Trust. Recognized as an AHRQ-designated Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) since 1997 and a Patient Safety Organization since 2008, ECRI is committed to driving evidence-based healthcare.
