A Nationwide Milestone—And What It Means for Our Members

A Nationwide Milestone—And What It Means for Our Members

We are proud to share an important milestone for ECRI and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices PSO: with the recent enrollment of a participating organization from Hawaii, our PSO now includes representation from all 50 U.S. states. While this achievement marks a significant moment in our growth, its true importance lies in the value it brings to the healthcare organizations we serve.

Reaching nationwide representation strengthens what has always defined ECRI and the ISMP PSO—collective learning at scale. As more organizations from across the country participate, our members benefit from an ever-expanding body of real-world safety data drawn from diverse care settings, patient populations, and organizational cultures. This breadth enhances our ability to identify emerging risks, surface meaningful patterns, and share insights that are both timely and actionable.

Today, PSO members contribute to a database that includes more than 8 million adverse events and 7,000+ root cause (causal) analyses. With nationwide participation, that data becomes even more powerful—supporting richer benchmarking, more relevant trend analysis, and guidance informed by experiences from every corner of the U.S.

For members, this translates into tangible improvements. Organizations that actively leverage ECRI and the ISMP PSO resources have achieved measurable results, including:

  • Improved RCA efficiency, reducing event analysis timelines by 18 days—from 31 days to 13
  • Annual savings of $541,000 through interventions to reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs)
  • An 85% reduction in hospital-acquired pressure injuries
  • A 19% reduction in serious safety events

These outcomes demonstrate the practical value of participating in a national PSO learning community—where shared experiences inform smarter system design and more effective prevention strategies.

Our expanding geographic footprint also includes organizations in Puerto Rico and Guam, further enriching the diversity of perspectives and insights available to members. This diversity strengthens the relevance of PSO analyses and helps ensure that guidance reflects the realities of healthcare delivery across varied environments.

As the only PSO that is also an AHRQ-designated Evidence-based Practice Center, ECRI uniquely combines real-world safety event data with rigorous evidence synthesis. This dual role enables us to translate national PSO insights into evidence-based, actionable recommendations that members can confidently apply within their own organizations.

We are grateful to our participating organizations for their commitment to transparency, learning, and improvement. Reaching all 50 states is not just a milestone—it is a multiplier, enhancing the value of PSO participation for every member and advancing safer care nationwide. Learn more about the PSO.
