Closing the Safety Gap in Sterile Compounding: Risks, Guidelines, and the Case for Gravimetric IV Workflow Systems

Overview

Sterile compounding remains one of the highest-risk areas of pharmacy practice, and the IV workflow management systems intended to make it safer introduce risks of their own. Error reports submitted to the ISMP National Medication Errors Reporting Program (ISMP MERP) point to recurring use-related problems with these systems, including gaps that current technology does not yet address.

In this 60-minute webinar from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), our expert presenters will examine those risks, drawing on findings from a forthcoming white paper and on reports submitted to ISMP MERP. Presenters will also review the ISMP Guidelines for Sterile Compounding and Safe Use of Sterile Compounding Technology, and close with a case study on implementing a gravimetric-based workflow system.

Learning objectives

  • Discuss the use-related risks associated with IV workflow management systems based on findings from white paper Evaluating IV Workflow Management Systems Through a Safety Lens: Current Capabilities, Persistent Gaps, and Unmet Needs

  • Outline safe pharmacy processes for IV workflow management systems as described in the ISMP Guidelines for Sterile Compounding and the Safe Use of Sterile Compounding Technology and white paper

  • Design safe implementation of a gravimetric-based IV workflow management system
